Student Explainer: State Budget 2026-27

May 2026

What is the State Budget?
Each year, the Victorian Government shares a State Budget. This is a plan for how public money will be spent on things like schools, hospitals, roads and transport.
The Budget affects students because it helps decide what schools get funding for and what support students can access.

What is being funded in education?
In the 2026–27 Budget, the government is funding new schools and school upgrades, expanding Kinder programs, and improving systems like the VCAA. There are also some extra support programs included. These investments can help improve the education system across Victoria.

What is less visible in this Budget?
A lot of the funding is focused on buildings and big systems. There is less focus on the things students experience every day at school. This includes things like wellbeing support, classroom resources, inclusive learning, and making sure students feel heard.

What does this mean for students?
Some students may notice new buildings or upgraded spaces at school. But they may not notice big changes in their classrooms or in the support they receive each day. Many students may still feel like their individual needs are not fully understood or supported.

Why does this matter?
Schools are more than just buildings. They are places where students learn, grow, feel supported and build relationships. When more funding goes towards infrastructure than student experience, students may not always feel the benefits in their everyday learning.

Key takeaway
The 2026–27 Budget invests money into education, but there could be more focus on students’ everyday experiences at school.
