Primary School Engagement (PSE) Evaluation | December 2018
The concept of student voice has been enthusiastically embraced in the past 20 years in schooling. In the Victorian context, the Department of Education (VicDET) included the notion of student voice into its Framework for Improving Student Outcomes (FISO) in 2015, following a large-scale consultation.
The state-wide expectation that classroom practices will include student voice, and that empowering students will lead to improved student outcomes, has encouraged schools to seek further support for the enactment of student voice. The VicSRC has recently sought to support primary schools in the enactment and embedding of student voice practices.
Student representation on School Governance Councils | November 2016
Back in the 1970s and 1980s, many Victorian government schools had elected student members on their school governance councils. However, in the 1990s, changes to regulations meant that the “student” membership category disappeared.
This study spoke to students and principals, with these two aims:
To find out what students and principals across a range of Victorian schools think about students being part of school councils.
To collect and create resources to help schools to start or do more to make sure that students are meaningfully involved in school councils.
VicSRC partnered with Deakin University and worked with six secondary school students as Research Interns to design, do, and analyse the data collected in the research. Research findings and 10 key recommendations emerged through consultation with students and principals from metro and regional Victoria.

Transitions project | November 2015
In 2015 the VicSRC worked with the Department of Education and Training to produce the VicSRC Transitions Report. VicSRC consulted with 155 Grade 6 and Year 7 students who shared their first-hand experiences and their ideas for improving the shift from primary to secondary school.
The report drew on the ideas and experiences of these students to address two key questions:
What are the key challenges faced by students in the transition from primary school to secondary school?
How can schools better support students to make smooth transitions from primary school to secondary school?
Students articulated six key recommendations for schools to make the move a better one.
